Maria Hancock 1864

Maria Hancock is a traditional early red Bristol sampler in the collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. This chart has been approved by the museum. If you look under citations on their website you will see their sampler listed in this publication. Part of the proceeds from the sale of this chart will be given to the museum.

Maria stitched all of the classic elements that we love to see in Bristol samplers. There are many alphabets. One alphabet is worked in Four sided stitch which is only sen in samplers worked in the Orphan Homes in the 1860s. There are also lots of border bands. Maria's sampler also includes the Bristol Bible motif which is seen in about 90% of Bristol red samplers.

Maria Hancock stitched a lovely sampler.
